Mitch Traphagen photo
A good bit of history was lost when the Giants Camp Restaurant on U.S. Highway 41 went away. At a minimum, I’m glad I was able to get a photo of it while it still stood. Unfortunately, I never had a meal there. Truly my loss. Also unfortunately, I can’t possibly do the place justice in this short piece. Tom Smithers (I’ll bet it was great - thanks for the note!) recognized it and, apparently, was lucky enough to have experienced it. Patricia Griffith (I think we need more country cooking! It’s good to hear from you) also got it and said the food was very good. Claudia Alvarez-Lang (unfortunately they did tear it down and yes, sad indeed) also recognized it as did Justina Horvath (Easy, yes — but worth running simply to remember a unique landmark. Great to hear from you!), Mary Walsh (great to hear from you again, Mary! Thanks for the note!), Bill and Margie Galbreath (I didn’t know that a vehicle hit it! Thanks for the note!), Paula Bavilacqua (thanks for writing — and drive carefully!) and Jerry Alexander (great to hear from you, my friend! You saw them as a kid in Washington, D.C.? Truly a small world). Jerry Alexander is also on the didn’t quite make it list from the week before with the Ochopee Post Office as is Robin Greenwood, who pointed out that finding these Postcards is easy using goodsearch.com. As an added benefit, Greenwood’s Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary earns money from each search — just type “Elmira’s” in the “Who do you Goodsearch for?” box. This week we have another postcard from our very own backyard — yet relatively few of us manage to visit it. It’s not exactly within walking distance, in a manner of speaking. It is unique, it is beautiful and despite the ravages of time, it is ours. Where is this? Send your best guess to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
